ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - Turns out the Buffalo Bills arent stuck with coach Doug Marrone, after all.Two weeks after informing reporters youre stuck with me, fortunately or unfortunately, Marrone made the surprise decision to step down Wednesday after the teams best finish in a decade. In a statement released by the team, Bills owner Terry Pegula announced the second-year coach exercised the opt-out clause in his contract. We are disappointed that Coach Marrone will no longer be an important part of our organization, Pegula said. We thank him for all of his hard work and leadership during his tenure, and wish him and his family the best with the next chapter in their lives.Pegula said the team will immediately begin searching for a coach. One candidate might already be on the staff in defensive co-ordinator Jim Schwartz. He was hired a year ago after previously spending five seasons coaching the Detroit Lions. The Bills have gone through six head coaches since Wade Phillips was fired following the 2000 season.Marrones decision to step down was a stunning one, coming after he led the Bills to a 9-7 finish. It was the Bills first winning season since a 9-7 finish in 2004. Buffalo, however, missed the playoffs to extend the NFLs longest active post-season drought to 15 seasons.Surprised me. Didnt see it coming, centre Eric Wood said in a text message to The Associated Press.Starting safety Aaron Williams blasted Marrone in a tweet.Lost all respect!! Williams said. The opt-out clause in Marrones contract went into effect after Pegula and wife Kim bought the team in October. Marrone had until Wednesday to make his decision. The team was sold after Hall of Fame owner Ralph Wilson died in March. The timing of Marrones departure comes as the Pegulas consider hiring a veteran presence to oversee the football operation. Former Bills GM turned broadcaster Bill Polian is considered a candidate to fill what would be a newly created position.Marrones status was still considered secure. On Monday, Marrone sidestepped a question about his future when asked whether he would consider opting out of his contract.I do not discuss my contract. Thats my rule. I never have and never will, he said.Marrone is now free to explore other job openings. Before stepping down, he had the backing of his players. That included veteran defensive tackle Kyle Williams who, on Monday, called it important for the team to maintain continuity after years of shuffling coaches and general managers.Weve got an opportunity to be a good football team going forward, Williams said. It would always be kind of a setback or something if you have a massive, massive overhaul.Marrone went 15-17 in Buffalo. He was hired after four seasons at Syracuse, where Marrone helped revive his alma maters struggling program.A former NFL offensive lineman, Marrone was brought in because of his offensive expertise. That, however, never materialized with the Bills who were instead led by a dominating defence over the past two years. The Bills offence finished 19th in yards gained in 2013, and regressed this year by finishing 26th. And Buffalos running attack was particularly pedestrian this year in finishing with 1,482 yards rushing, the teams fewest in a 16-game season. The offensive struggles were in part the result of a continuing revolving door at quarterback.EJ Manuel, the teams first-round pick in the 2013 draft, proved injury prone in missing six games during his rookie season. This year, Manuel was benched following a 2-2 start. He was replaced by 10-year journeyman Kyle Orton who finished the season as the starter. Orton, however, surprised the team Monday when he announced his intention to retire rather than return for another season.Marrone had several eruptions this past season. He blew up at defensive end Jerry Hughes on the final day of training camp in August. Two weeks before the start of the season, Marrone had a heated exchange along the sideline with team president Russ Brandon.Marrone, at times, was also terse with reporters in providing one-word answers.Hes not the first Bills coach to step down while still under contract.Mike Mularkey quit the team for undisclosed reasons following the 2005 season after Tom Donahoe was fired as president and general manager.Marrone was supposed to be part of a new era in Buffalo that began with Russ Brandon being elevated to president and CEO on Jan. 1, 2013.Brandon hired Marrone. That spring, Doug Whaley was promoted to general manager after Buddy Nix stepped down.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Miles Wood Jersey . But luckily for the Canadian squad, one goal was all it needed. Winnipegs Sophie Schmidt scored the winner off a Diana Matheson corner kick to seal Canadas third-place spot in the Torneio Internacional de Futebol Feminino in Brazil on Sunday. The NHL Play of the Year showdown kicks off with some slick moves going head-to-head with a combination of soft hands and endless patience. Keith Kinkaid Jersey . -- Jacksonville Jaguars rookie receiver Marqise Lee has agreed to terms on a four-year contract worth more than $5 million. Michael McLeod Jersey . The Islanders own the fifth pick in the 2014 draft but had until June 1 to decide whether to keep it or defer to 2015. The selection was packaged in the teams deal for Thomas Vanek on October 27, 2013.The Los Angeles Kings hope to lock up their second Stanley Cup title in three seasons Wednesday, when they try to complete a sweep of the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Listen to the game on TSN Radio and watch live streaming of the post-game news conferences on TSN.ca and TSN GO. The Kings own a 3-0 lead heading into Game 4 of the best-of-seven Stanley Cup Finals. Los Angeles won the first two tilts of this series on home ice, posting comeback victories to win Games 1 and 2 beyond regulation before grabbing Mondays Game 3 meeting in New York by a 3-0 score. L.A., which beat New Jersey in six games for the franchises first Cup victory in 2012, can become the first NHL team to win the Stanley Cup Finals in a sweep since Detroit claimed four straight against Washington in 1998. However, the Kings also held a 3-0 lead over the Devils in 2012 but then dropped two straight before clinching the title on home ice in Game 6. The Rangers, meanwhile, will try to stave off elimination in Game 4 and send the series back to L.A. for a fifth meeting on Friday. New York is still shooting for its first win in the Stanley Cup Finals since 1994, when it beat Vancouver in seven games for its first title since 1940. The first Cup Finals game at Madison Square Garden in 20 years didnt go the way the Rangers planned, as the Kings used a strong performance by Jonathan Quick to deliver a 3-0 win and push New York to the brink of elimination. Quick made 32 saves to record his second shutout of the 2014 postseason and ninth of his playoff career. Jeff Carter, Jake Muzzin and Mike Richards all scored for the Kings, who needed overtime in Game 1 and double-overtime in Game 2 to win their two games at home. They got a late goal in the first period in Game 3, however, then scored twice more in the second to back Quicks stellar effort. "It was a playoff hockey game. We were trying to win a hockey game," said Quick. "We did a lot of things the right way. We were able to do that. Now we get ready for the next one. The fourth one is always the most difficult." The Rangers were playing their first home game in the Cup Finals since a Game 7 win against Vancouver on June 14, 1994. New York was hoping a familiar setting would get them in the win column, but that was not the case. The Rangers were unable to solve Quick, though, and Henrik Lundqvist was victimized for all three goals on just 15 shots. "He was obviously the best player on the ice tonight," said New York head coacch Alain Vigneault about Quick.dddddddddddd "Give them credit, though, because they found a way to put the puck past a real good goaltender and we couldnt do it." If New York is to win this series, it will have to do something only four other teams have done in NHL playoff history -- win four straight games after falling in a 3-0 hole. One of those clubs is the Kings, who rallied from a 3-0 deficit to beat the San Jose Sharks in the first round of this years playoffs. The only time a team erased a 3-0 deficit to win the Cup was in 1942 when Toronto defeated Detroit. Shortly after killing off a New York penalty and with time winding down in the first period, the Kings skated down the other way. Justin Williams gained the zone through the middle, slipping over to the right before sending a short pass back to his left. Carter took the feed and snapped a shot from the top of the right circle that hit off the tip of the left skate blade of a diving Dan Girardi and in off the glove of Lundqvist with just 0.8 seconds left. It was the first time the Kings had a lead in a game since the third period of Game 6 of the Western Conference finals, a span of 249:14. "Well, I know there wasnt a lot of shots on net," said Lundqvist about the goal. "But we felt we played a real good period, the pace was good, there wasnt a lot of room, both teams were battling real hard for ice. That was their only chance in the first period. We out-chanced them 4-1. We had some real good looks. Stuff like that happens." Muzzin made it 2-0 L.A. less than five minutes into the second stanza when his shot from the point hit off Rangers forward Martin St. Louis before beating Lundqvist, who was screened in front by Carter. Richards then completed the scoring with 2:46 left in the second period. Los Angeles forward Anze Kopitar had an assist in the game and has 21 helpers in the postseason. His 26 points leads all skaters in the postseason, while Carter and Williams are tied for second with 24 each. Williams has recorded a point in five straight games, and has two goals and seven assists over that span. If the Rangers are to make a series of this, they will likely need forward Rick Nash to contribute on offense. Nash has yet to register a point in this series despite totaling 15 shots on net in the first three games. Nash, who led New York with 26 goals during the regular season, has had a disappointing playoffs overall, recording just 10 points (3G, 7A) in 23 contests.
